Try Dives - FAQs

So, you have read this web site from pixel to pixel, and you think you want to give diving a go?

  • What is a Try Dive?

It’s a taster session where one of our qualified divers will kit you out in full scuba gear, mask and fins. Then take you to the shallow end of the pool and to get you used to breathing underwater. Then, as you get used to it, move deeper getting you to move around, up and down, and maybe the odd somersault. Getting used to the mobility, and the controls on the kit. It is fun and it will usually be enough to convince you that this is something you want to spend the rest of your life doing.

  • Where does it all happen?

Takes part at the Lonsdale Pool, 41 Bishop Lonsdale Way, Mickleover, DE3 9DF.

  • When does it occur?

It is late in the evening with our sessions being 21:00-22:00 hrs, and we currently only have the pool every 3rd Tuesday of the month.

  • Who can have ago?

Open to everyone from the age of 12 and above, within our branch. Some branches will take 10-year-olds, and if you wish we would be glad to help you find one in the area. There are a few medical reasons that we could not take you, but these are few and far between. Stress induced asthma, lung diseases and major heart diseases would likely prevent you from diving.

  • How much does it cost?

Each try dive costs £20 per person. We would ask if you could pay this in advance of the session.

  • How do I book a try dive?

Click here and tell us you would like to book a try dive! We will need to know your foot size and an estimate on jacket size, small, medium or large is close enough. We will contact you as soon as we can and confirm a date and ask any other specifics.

  • I would prefer a male/female instructor, is this possible?

Yes, if it would make you more comfortable, but please specify at the time of contact. There is physical contact within the try dive, but our instructors have all been DBS checked and approved. We also sign up to the BSAC policy on safeguarding children.

  • I am wheelchair bound; can I still have a go?

Scuba diving is an inclusive activity and offers everyone a window to the underwater world, including those faced with physical barriers. Once in the water divers living with a disability or not, enter a world of weightlessness and persons that usually face mobility constraints on land find that they can move independently and easily underwater just like everyone else. Before your try dive, we will discuss with you the support you need. We can accommodate paraplegics and quadriplegic divers; we will just need to make special arrangements for the pool. If you have a have visual limitations, hearing difficulties or are an amputee, we can also accommodate… just make us aware at the time of contacting us.
